Directly related to the current eating habits and overweight , in the world currently there are 246 million people affected by diabetes type 2, a figure which studies the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and could reach 489 million people by 2030.

One of the complications that diabetics have are skin healing problems. These problems in diabetic patients, in general, and especially the feet, occur because blood circulation is impaired, bad nervous sensibility that predisposes to other local trauma, less responsive to infections and a decrease in the rate of cell repair and repaired tissues are weak compared to healthy tissue. In short, there is not enough oxygen to damaged tissue.

In fact, diabetes is responsible for 20% of amputations of the lower extremities. Spain is the 2nd country with more lower limb amputations due to diabetes type 2, as published by the Diabetic Foot Magazine in its issue of October 2014.

In this same professional publication argues the need to address the treatment of diabetic foot from a multidisciplinary perspective, where besides physicians, nurses, surgeons and endocrinologists, acquired a significant position the application of Hyperbaric Medicine, indication endorsed even by the highest authority in the matter, the UHMS (Undersea Medical Society Hyperbarical).

One of the world’s leading experts on Hyperbaric Medicine, Dr. Nina Subottina explains in his book “Hyperbaric Medicine” which is a pathophysiological hyperbaric oxygen treatment for diabetic foot. The treatment involves subjecting the patient breathing pure oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure, which can only be achieved in a hyperbaric chamber with features that owns the Hyperbaric Medical Center of Estepona, HMCE, being of individual character and both to apply an exclusive and personalized treatment for each patient need.

The hyperbaric oxygen adds Dr. Subottina, acts on the mechanisms altered by hypoxia or lack of oxygen allowing diffusion of oxygen in blood at a deeper level, increases collagen synthesis, enhances angiogenesis or creation of new blood capillaries, favors the response to infection and even improves the assimilation of antibiotics.

It is estimated that the costs of diabetes represents between 6,3% and 7,4% of total health expenditure in Spain.

29% of health spending is devoted to diabetes, while 40% goes to treatment of associated complications.

Patients with type 2 diabetes with complications and comorbidities generate a cost 2,4 times higher for the system than those without complications.

Undergo Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy sessions can not only reduce the area of amputation in diabetic foot complicated cases, it can completely eliminate this intervention if caught early.
